Why Who Skates?

Because Who cares! As a designer and fabricator with over 20 years dedicated to building Skateparks, Who Skates has the experience and professional relationships to make any Skatepark a reality.

Wood v. Steel v. Concrete- Which is best?

Although Who Skates provides services for Skateparks which range from the Largest Design/Build projects to simply providing a Town with a small Starter Park, we simply can't make up our mind which material we like the best.

Our basic rules are as follows-

  - Wood builds the BEST Mini and Vert ramps

  - Steel builds the best boxes, rails, hubbas and launch ramps...

   - Concrete builds the best Plazas, pools and bowls.

Of course budget plays into any Skatepark design and can ultimately be the deciding factor.

Who should design our Skatepark?

Any Skatepark should include many elements in design ranging from local skaters, local contractors, City employees and a QUALIFIED SKATEPARK DESIGNER. Now, a salesman toting a catoalog full of prefabbed ramps is not a QUALIFIED SKATEPARK DESIGNER . Without ever having stepped on a Skateboard it is all but impossible to effectively design a park. Catalog-toting salesmen have but one item on their agenda- sell you as many ramps from their catalog as possible. They will tell you that a paved surface full of their "LIFETIME WARRANTED RAMPS" is absolutely the way to go...

There is little or no incentive for them to actually help you create a skatepark that reflects the wants, needs and desires of your local skaters.Usually the kids, who have been waiting in some instances for years for their park, are all too happpy to take what is offered.

Remember, an area full of ramps does not always become a Skatepark.

So, are all prefabricated ramps bad?

Absolutely not. There are instances where a town already has a paved surface, whether it be an unused tennis or B-ball court or simply an empty parking lot, making use of what already exists may be the best use of money.

Sure, in a perfect world every Town would have three concrete bowls, a selection of Mini ramps, an Urban concrete Skate Plaza (with lights and a water fountain), and a gazebo with free drinks but that's not happening. In some instances the budget is too small to effectively make use of custom concrete and a Prefabbed ramp park is the best, easiest and most cost-effective solution to get your kids skating.

Who Skates has been fabricating Steel and Aluminum ramps for over 20 years but one thing will never change- our ramps are built one at a time, just as you want them and do NOT appear in any catalog. A catalog simply means that someone has already interviewed your skaters and knows EXACTLY what works for them. We prefer to actually listen to your skaters and build what they want.

You keep mentioning wood? I thought wood just fell apart?

Well, it did. But it wasn't the wood's fault. In the 1980's and eraly 1990's skateparks began to explode and every skater dawned a tool belt, bought an air compressor and opened an account at the local lumber yard. Many of these "builders" were young and inexperienced with little or no construction experience at all. The ramps that came during that era did satisfy a huge amount of the demand but placed a HUGE amount of maintenance burden on the Towns for upkeep. Many ramps and parks fell into disrepair and were torn down or replaced with longer-lasting steel ramps.

Let me go on record and state that wood builds GREAT skateparks. It's affordable, quiet and skates really well but it does require frequent maintenance. If maintenance is neglected the ramps will fall into disrepair and fail.

As is the case with any product, a qualified builder is required to effectively build good wooden ramps.
