HISTORY of Who

We began as a commercial and residential contracting firm an the early 1980’s. In 1987, during the last dip in the home market, we embarked on a mission that would shape who we are and what we do today. On November 17th, 1987, RATZ Skatepark opened its doors as the first indoor Skatepark in Maine. From there the business grew into its famous location in Biddeford, Maine where accolades including Transworld Skateboarding Magazine declaring in it’s center spread that our vert ramp as “the best in the free world” (December, 1991) were garnered. The dedication to providing indoor refuge for New England skaters continued into the 2000’s at R3 indoor Skatepark in Kennebunk, Maine. R3 closed in 2004 and so concluded a long history of kids, pros and kids who were destined to be pros. Nearly 250,000 skaters passed through our doors during those nearly 20 years and the experience gained will forever be invaluable to our company.

During those twenty years, however, Who Skates, then named SPC Skateparks, pushed the envelope by building approximately 200 private and municipal ramps and Skateparks all over the country, but predominately in New England. Concrete, wood, steel and aluminum were all within our reach and in 1997 we opened a dedicated fabrication facility for the sole purpose of fabricating skateboard parks. Gone were the days of living on the road with a skill saw and a hammer. By committing to the process of manufacturing our ramps, rather than just “building” ramps, our methods and techniques were honed with constant experimentation and testing. To this day we own our dedicated wood and metal shop in Kennebunkport, Maine where we produce wood and steel ramps for shipment all over the country. 20 years building Skateparks- that’s a lot of ramps.
